Haiti Donations Picked Up!
Well, today was the big day...our clothing and shoe donations were picked up for delivery to people in Haiti. We were surprised that Jim Scott was able to attend so soon after having shoulder surgery. He brought his wife Heather, and friends Brianne and Matt, to help take all of the bags. We needed 3 pickup trucks to take away all of the donations! Watch our Smilebox interactive collage to see highlights of the day and find out how many items of clothing and pairs of shoes the kids collected :) Click play to watch and then click on individual photos to see them close up.

Lost Generation
Today we introduced our Literacy Unit on Perspective and Point of View with a youtube video. The video, Lost Generation is in two parts. Stop the video at 48 seconds and discuss what you think of the author's perspective on life. Then rewind and watch the whole thing from the beginning. Discuss how your perspective (and hers) changed as you watched!
Conducting Experiments
We conducted our first experiment in Science today. We are learning to use the Scientific Method to write about our experiments. Below is our first write up:

Graphing Mystery!
Students were getting creative trying to figure out what the 'Mystery Graph' might be showing. Students were given a blank graph and asked what story it might be telling.
Some of their ideas: heart rate, money spent, traveling elevations, fundraising for Haiti, traveling distances, Tune of music, migration patterns of ducks... You get the idea!

Remembrance Day
My grandfather and four of his brothers went to war. He is the one at the bottom left. So grateful that they all made it home safely. Remembering them, and others who gave their lives for our freedom.

Grade 1D Buddies
Dear parents of the students of 6pike,
Today we went down to one of the grade 1 classrooms and helped them with technology. One of their daily 5 activities is reading books online with various online book readers (tumblebooks, starfall, e.g.) . We had lots of fun! First, we helped them memorize their code and log in. Once their desktop loaded, we helped them get to the book readers and listened to an online book with our buddies! Once they get to know how to use the laptops very well, we hope to make an online little bird tales with them!

Mathemagician TEDtalk
One of my favourite TED talks is by a math professor named Arthur Benjamin. He can do amazing math-magic tricks and I was lucky enough to see him live a couple of years ago at a math conference. He has a new talk about a special pattern called Fibonacci numbers that goes nicely with what we are learning about patterns right now. Enjoy!

Parent Toolkit
Hi Parents! I am sharing a resource from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) called the Parent's Toolkit. This site has supports for math from Kindergarten all the way through high school. If you want support with what math learning is like for children these days, here is a good place to start.
